On 19 May 2026, a team of consultants from KfW Development Bank visited WAVE Foundation’s Solar Irrigation Pump and PV Agrovoltaic Pilot Project under its Renewable Energy Program to assess the implementation progress and field-level performance. During the visit, the delegation inspected the solar irrigation system and the PV Agrovoltaic installation where agricultural activities are carried out beneath solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. The consultants appreciated the project’s innovative approach to maximizing land utilization while simultaneously promoting clean energy generation and sustainable agricultural production. They expressed optimism about its potential to contribute to renewable energy expansion, climate resilience and sustainable rural development in Bangladesh.

The KfW team also interacted with pump operators and local farmers to understand the project’s operational performance and socio-economic benefits. Discussions focused on the effectiveness of solar-powered irrigation, improved water accessibility, reduced dependence on diesel-powered irrigation and the role of renewable energy in mitigating climate change. The interactions provided valuable insights into how solar-powered irrigation is supporting agricultural activities and contributing to more sustainable farming practices.

Farmers expressed their appreciation to WAVE Foundation, Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) and the KfW-supported project team for providing affordable and reliable irrigation through solar-powered pumps. They shared that the project has reduced their irrigation costs, eliminated their dependence on expensive diesel pumps and ensured a more dependable water supply for their crops. They also noted that the use of clean solar energy has benefited both their livelihoods and the environment.

The visit demonstrated how integrated renewable energy solutions can improve agricultural efficiency, reduce farmers’ energy costs and strengthen resilience to climate-related challenges. It also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange field-level experiences and explore the broader potential of solar-powered solutions for sustainable agriculture and climate-resilient rural development. Moving forward, scaling such integrated solar solutions can support lower-cost farming, reduce dependence on diesel, strengthen climate resilience and contribute to Bangladesh’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable agriculture.
