On 14 October 2025, in a significant step toward decarbonizing Bangladesh’s agriculture, Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) has officially resumed financing support for Solar Irrigation Pumps (SIPs) under a renewed strategy and structure. To mark this milestone, a signing ceremony was held at IDCOL’s Multipurpose Conference Hall, celebrating a new partnership with WAVE Foundation. Under this collaboration, WAVE Foundation has received BDT 34.9 crore in financing support from IDCOL, with co-funding from KfW, Germany, to implement 56 Solar Irrigation Pumps (SIPs) including 39 grid-integrated systems across Chuadanga, Jhenaidah and Kushtia districts. The initiative aims to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and promote sustainable, carbon-free agriculture in rural Bangladesh.

The event was attended by Mr. Michael Sumser-Hellstern, Director, KfW country office in Bangladesh, along with senior officials from Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA), Power Division and IDCOL. Founder Executive Director Mohsin Ali, Deputy Executive Director Ms. Nasefa Ali and other representatives of WAVE Foundation attended the event. During the event, Mr. Alamgir Morshed, Executive Director & CEO of IDCOL, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to installing 10,000 SIPs by 2030, supporting the government’s vision to reduce fossil fuel dependency and advance green energy in agriculture.

So far, WAVE has operated 83 SIPs with a capacity of 3.5 megawatts, covering 16,600 bighas of farmland and benefiting over 66,400 farmers. These systems are replacing 913 diesel pumps, significantly reducing irrigation costs and carbon emissions while enhancing agricultural productivity. Through this new partnership, WAVE Foundation and IDCOL are accelerating the transition toward sustainable, solar-powered farming. By replacing fossil fuel-dependent irrigation with clean solar energy, this initiative not only reduces carbon emissions but also lowers operational costs for farmers, increases agricultural productivity and strengthens rural livelihoods. Empowering farmers with affordable, reliable technology ensures greater food security and economic stability while contributing to national efforts to combat climate change.
