WAVE Foundation has been working on safe vegetable production in Singair Upazila of Manikganj district for more than 4 years. About 137 farmers are producing and marketing safe vegetables under the organization. Different types of organic fertilizers and pesticides (pheromone traps, sticky traps, lures and trichordama) are being used instead of life-threatening chemical fertilizers and pesticides in their vegetable production. In this regard, WAVE Foundation has been providing regular advice and inputs support to farmers.
Farmers in the area now reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and regularly use bio-pesticides available at low cost. As a result, vegetables produced like 20-30 years ago have an incomparable taste along with good quality at a low price. Seeing this success, many local people are using organic pesticides on the land to produce safe vegetables on their own initiative. They are collecting Pheromone Traps, Glue Traps, Lures and Trichordama in consultation with agency officials. Again, many farmers are cultivating a small amount of land safely or poison-free for their families, even if not for sale.
Blocks or clusters are being developed around villages or unions of safe vegetable production demonstration in Singair Upazilla (Sub-district) area. And this village or union is declared as safe vegetable production village or cluster. Officials of public and private organizations from different parts of the country are coming to visit this vegetable cluster. As a result of this promotion, farmers are able to market their produce very easily at a fair price. It has opened up a new horizon for the common people of the area including the farmers.
