On 9 December 2025, Begum Rokeya Day was observed with due respect and enthusiasm in Ghatkai under the initiative of the Galachipa Upazila Administration. The day, commemorating the legacy of pioneer women’s rights activist Begum Rokeya, celebrates women who break barriers and uplift their communities. As part of the observance, the prestigious “Indomitable Woman Award” was presented in five categories to recognize women who have demonstrated extraordinary resilience, leadership and social contribution.
In the category of Contribution to Social Development, the award was proudly conferred upon Seluna Begum of Golkhali Union, Galachipa Upazila a courageous and determined woman whose journey echoes the true spirit of being “Indomitable.” Seluna is a member of the Prosperity Group under the PPEPP Project implemented by WAVE Foundation.
Coming from a financially vulnerable background, Seluna once struggled to support her family and secure a stable future for her children. Limited income opportunities and social constraints made it difficult for her to dream beyond day-to-day survival. However, instead of accepting these limitations, Seluna chose to change her circumstances. Through continuous participation in group meetings, financial literacy sessions and skills development trainings facilitated by WAVE Foundation, she gradually built her confidence and entrepreneurial capacity. With support from the project, she received an Income Generating Activity (IGA) for Buck Service Center. Today, her enterprise earns approximately BDT 82,000 per month. With her earnings, Seluna has purchased a cow to further diversify her livelihood, bought an easy bike to create employment for her son, repaired her home and started saving regularly in the bank. Most importantly, she has transmuted her family’s social standing.
Expressing her gratitude, Seluna shared,
“WAVE Foundation stood beside me when I needed guidance and support. The trainings helped me believe in myself. With this income, my family is secure, and I can plan for the future. People in the community now respect me and that gives me immense strength.”
Beyond her personal success, Seluna actively encourages other women in her community to participate in group activities, start small enterprises and become financially independent. She often shares her experience with new members, inspiring them to overcome fear and take initiative. Her leadership to uplift others are key reasons she truly deserves the Indomitable Woman Award.
