In the green fields of Singair upazila, Manikganj, farming is more than an occupation, it is a way of life. Yet, for many smallholders, unpredictable weather, rising input costs, and crop failures have often turned dreams into despair. Last year, Saiful Islam, a young farmer watched helplessly as his cucumber, ridge gourd, and bitter gourd crops failed. With no savings left he even considered giving up farming altogether.
The tide began to turn when WAVE Foundation’s Integrated Agriculture Unit extended both financial and technical support. Through training, demonstrations, and regular follow-up, WAVE introduced Saiful and hundreds of other farmers in Singair to eco-friendly techniques that could transform their fields.
This season, Saiful applied plastic mulching sheets, organic fertilizers, pheromone traps, and sticky traps on part of his land. The results were striking, production costs fell by almost half, soil fertility improved, and pest attacks were controlled without harmful chemicals. Already, Saiful has harvested and sold ridge gourd and bitter gourd in the local market, earning profits that once seemed impossible. “I had almost lost hope in farming,” Saiful shared with a smile. “Now, with WAVE’s guidance, I can see a future where farming brings both income and pride.”
He is not alone in this success. Across 10 unions of Singair, 591 farmers are now practicing safe vegetable production and marketing with WAVE’s support. “Organic farming and mulching methods are inspiring farmers to reduce costs and boost yields,” said Mrinmoy Roy, Agriculture Officer at WAVE Foundation. Upazila Agriculture Officer, Md. Habibul Bashar Chowdhury added, “Mulching is becoming increasingly popular and plays a vital role in improving soil fertility.”
Saiful’s renewed hope reflects a larger story of a community. WAVE Foundation’s interventions are not just improving harvests, they are restoring hope and confidence among farmers, proving that eco-friendly agriculture can drive both prosperity and community transformation. With knowledge and timely support, farming in Singair is no longer just survival, it is a pathway to prosperity.
