WAVE Foundation organized a `Mental Health Camp’ on 24 April 2026 in Galachipa Upazila under Patuakhali District to strengthen community awareness of mental health, provide counseling support and connect individuals with appropriate services. The initiative was implemented as part of the “Pathways to Prosperity for Extremely Poor People- European Union (PPEPP-EU) Project” funded by PKSF and the European Union.

The camp was conducted under the leadership of Dr. Himadri Roy, Psychiatrist and Medical Officer of Barguna General Hospital who served as the chief consultant. Through individual consultations, participants received professional guidance on a range of mental health concerns including depression, anxiety, stress and trauma. The camp also sought to promote positive attitudes and empathy toward people experiencing mental health conditions while ensuring that serious cases were referred for specialized treatment when necessary.

A registration process was conducted for all participants attending the camp. Following registration, Dr. Himadri Roy assessed each participant’s mental health and provided counseling and medical advice tailored to their specific needs. Participants were able to openly discuss their concerns in a confidential and supportive environment, helping them better understand their conditions and available support options. Prescriptions were provided where necessary and individuals requiring further treatment were identified for referral to specialist services.

The initiative generated encouraging outcomes for both participants and the wider community. Many participants received mental health counseling services for the first time and gained a better understanding of how to cope with stress, anxiety and other mental health challenges. A total of 40 patients received free medicines, reducing barriers to accessing immediate care. In addition, several individuals with more complex conditions were referred to specialist doctors to ensure continued treatment and follow-up support.

The Mental Health Camp received a positive response from participants and community members alike. Beyond providing direct services, the initiative helped raise awareness and encouraged open conversations about mental health within families and communities. By improving access to counseling, treatment, and referral services, the camp contributed to promoting mental well-being and reducing stigma associated with mental health conditions. Expanding such activities in the future will help to build greater awareness, empathy, and access to mental health services within society.
