Roundtable Discussion on World Food Day and International Poverty Eradication Day

A roundtable discussion meeting titled World Food Day and International Poverty Eradication Day: Relevancy of Right to Food Act was held successfully on 22th October 2013, Tuesday, at 10.00am at Sagor-Runi Auditorium, Reporters Unity, Dhaka. Anti Poverty Platform, a platform consisting of 32 organizations and networks organized the roundtable. Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed, Chairman, PKSF and Chairperson, Governance Advocacy Forum, Prof. M M Akash, Department of Economics, Dhaka University, Ms. Monisha Biswas, Manager, Policy & Advocacy Department, Oxfam attended the program as Panel Discussant. Mohsin Ali, Convener, Anti Poverty Platform and Executive Director, WAVE Foundation presented the Keynote Paper on the occasion while representatives of BRAC, PSTC, RDRS, GAD Alliance, INCIDIN Bangladesh and Governance Coalition shared their opinion on specific issue on behalf of APP member organizations.

Agreed with the demands of the platform Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed stated that, if there is an act, in reference of that people could create pressure on the authority, so enactment of Right to Food Act is very important. Prof. M M Akash said every Political Parties may agree in principle with the demand and also it would not be difficult for policy makers to enact the act but the question will be raised when it comes to the matter of implementation. Ms. Monisha Biswas gave importance on ensuring nutritious food and added that we need to address climate change issue in perspective of food security in Bangladesh. All speakers emphasized on the entitlement of right to food issue. They also demanded political parties commitment in their Election Manifesto and declaration of a roadmap towards enacting Right to Food Act that will make them accountable to the people.
